The UMF Fitness & Recreation Center offers group swim lessons during the academic semesters. Classes are taught under the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program curriculum and are designed to teach participants to be safe in, on, and around the water.

Registration Information

  • Registration opens on Tuesday, September 3, 2019! Do not attempt to register early.
  • Registration CLOSES five (5) business days before the first lesson. Registration forms must be received by our front desk on or before five (5) business days before the first class. This includes mailed in form.
  • Forms and full payment can be submitted in person to our front desk or mailing: UMF FRC Attn: Jennifer, 152 Quebec St. Farmington Maine 04938. Please do not fax or e-mail forms.
  • Payment is required in full at time of registration, for classes with fees.
  • E-mail is our primary contact avenue. Please ensure you list a current e-mail on your registration form.
  • Classes are limited in size to benefit students. Minimum of 4 participants required for each class. Levels may be combined due to low enrollment without notice.
  • Wait-listed participants will be contacted if space is available. Please do not come to the first class.

Helpful Information

  • Classes are taught under the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program curriculum. Classes are designed to teach water safety and confidence. Skill, coordination, growth, regular attendance, and practice, determine advancement through the levels.
  • Classes can be observed through the windows on the track. You are permitted to observe class from the pool deck if you are not disrupting the learning environment. Any cell phone use is restricted to the lobby area only.
  • Children who are not toilet trained MUST wear a swim diaper or cloth diaper with rubber pants under their swim suit.
  • The bathroom in the front lobby must be used as a family changing area for children of the opposite sex over 4 years old. Showers should be taken before and after class.
  • Non-members are not permitted to wander throughout the facility, use any facility equipment, courts or the track.

Constructed around the University of Maine Farmington academic schedule and student staff availability, our programs offerings may not be the same year to year.

 

Level Check Guidance:

How old is the child?

  • 6 months – 3 years: Parent & Me 1 or 2
  • 3 years – 5 years: Preschool 1, 2, or 3
  • 6 years or older: Learn to Swim 1-6

 

Can the child put their face in the water?

Yes – Go to next question

No – Place in preschool 1 or learn to swim level 1 (check age)

 

Can the child float on their front and back without help?

Yes – Go to next question

No – Place in preschool 1 or learn to swim level 1 (check age)

 

Can the child swim on their front and back 10-15 feet without stopping?

Yes – Go to next question

No – Place in preschool 2 or level 2 (check age)

 

Can the child swim front crawl and back crawl for 15 yards with breathing?

Yes – Go to next question

No – Place in preschool 3 or Level 3 (age dependent)

 

Can the child swim 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, and 15 yards of breaststroke, butterfly, and elementary backstroke?

Yes – Level 5

No – Level 4

 

Can the child swim 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl, and 25 yards of breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke?

No – Level 5

Yes – Level 6
