Meet the Team

Dr. Brian Cavanaugh

Brian has worked as a special educator, district administrator, professor, and at a State department of education. His primary area of expertise is the education of students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) and also has an interest in education policy implementation. He serves on the Leadership and Policy Council for PBIS Maine, providing professional development in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Brian has worked primarily as a teacher of students with EBD in public schools and residential treatment centers. He has also worked as a professional development provider and behavioral consultant in Massachusetts and Maine. Brian’s scholarly work has appeared in publications such as Education and Treatment of Children and Remedial and Special Education as well as national conferences such as the American Educational Research Association, the conference of the Association for Positive Behavior Supports, and the annual convention of the Council for Exceptional Children. Brian enjoys spending time with his family and watching the Celtics and Patriots win.

Sandra MacArthur
Director of Educational Outreach

Sandra MacArthur is the Director of Educational Outreach. She has 10 years of teaching experience at the K-12 level, and 11 years of service in Administrative capacities. Her administration experience includes serving as a Director of Special Services and as Superintendent of Schools in Union 113 and MSAD 59. She is the former Executive Director of the Maine Superintendents Association.

Martha Smiley
Administrative Specialist II

Martha Smiley is the full time Administrative Assistant in the Graduate office. She joined the team in March of 2017. Martha brings with her a background in administrative in student support, record keeping and special projects. Martha assists students throughout their time in the graduate office from inquiry to graduation. She is available by email or phone to answer any questions you may have about our MSEd., Certificate or MMCP programs.

Destiny Long
Administrative Specialist II

Destiny is the half time administrative specialist in the Graduate Office. She joined the team in August of 2017, which allowed her to return to her hometown of Farmington. She brought with her a background of administrative support in the areas of grants, intellectual property, and university development, as well as a reputation for providing outstanding customer service. Destiny is now using her skills to assist students, prospective students, faculty and staff to navigate the policies and procedures for the Graduate Office.  She is available to answer any questions you may have about our SPARC program, single course registration and upcoming events.

Sue Farris
Coordinator of Educational Assessment & Special Projects

As the Coordinator of Educational Assessment and Special Projects, Sue is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting assessment and other data for graduate programs and in support of accreditation efforts, as well as planning and executing special events for the Office of Graduate Studies. She teaches undergraduate courses in psychology and instructional design, and has a special interest in Adult Learning and Development.
