UMF students make a difference in the community with Month of Service

FARMINGTON, ME (September 8, 2011)—As the new academic year begins, University of Maine at Farmington students, faculty and staff will join hands in UMF’s annual Month of Service on September 10, 17 and 24. Developed by the UMF Student Life and Center for Student Involvement offices, the Month of Service provides students with a positive way to come together with campus and community volunteers to work on community service projects throughout the Farmington, Wilton and Industry areas.

Of special interest this year is the University’s close collaboration with United Way of the Tri-Valley Area. Working with Nancy Teel, United Way volunteer center coordinator and 2010 UMF graduate, campus and community volunteers will help with storm-window construction, weatherization, community garden and grounds clean-up efforts.

“Partnering some of our annual Month of Service projects with United Way’s fall volunteer efforts seems a natural fit,” said Kirsten Swan, UMF director of the Center for Student Development and UMF representative for the Franklin County Volunteer Network. “UMF values its close relationship with the town of Farmington and surrounding communities and this is a great way to educate our students on all the opportunities that exist in the area to reach out and positively affect someone else’s life.”

As in the past, this year’s program has scheduled service projects at local schools, churches, food pantries, public service providers and non-profit agencies. Students can sign up to help with any number of community service projects including: helping the Double B Equine Rescue Corp. care for abandoned horses, caring for pets at the Franklin County Animal Shelter, assisting with the Healthy Community Coalition community garden, spending time with residents of the Pierce House, and working with campus facilities to help beautify the UMF campus.
