Description of the Internship:
LearningWorks reimagines learning through innovative programs that help children, adults, and families realize their potential and build thriving communities. Our Aim High program places teams of dedicated AmeriCorps members in struggling schools in Southern Maine. Our members provide tutoring, mentoring, and extended learning opportunities in and outside of the classroom.

Summer AmeriCorps Membership entails a robust professional experience. Members commit to completing 450 total hours of service – approximately 40 hours per week – for the duration of the term. They commit to a regular service schedule and serve as a reliable resource for their school site and community.

Each position begins in May 2019 and concludes on August 9, 2019. In May and June, members provide consistent support to students and teachers, both inside and outside of the classroom. In late June through August, they assist with summer school and various community programs such as LearningWorks AfterSchool Summer, Mayo Street Arts, and Parks and Recreation.

Responsibilities:
  • Tutoring and mentoring students one-on-one
  • Instructing small groups of students
  • Supporting teachers in the classroom
  • Engaging families and the community
  • Leading extended learning opportunities, like afterschool clubs and summer day camps
Qualifications:
The AIMS HIGH Program is seeking student interns/members who are:

  • Self motivated with a high degree of flexibility
  • Clear, concise oral and written communication
  • Ability to manage time, set priorities, plan and implement projects effectively
  • Be at least 17 years of age at the time of enrollment
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Have a high school diploma or high school equivalency (current high school students 17 years or older are also eligible)
