Description of the Internship:
The mission of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG) is to inspire meaningful connections among people, plants and nature through horticulture, education and research.

CMBG is seeking Education Programs Interns for the summer.  This internship prepares college students to enter the field of environmental or museum education by providing hands-on experience with planning, organizing, hosting, and evaluating classes, demonstrations, interpretation, and exhibits in a public garden setting.  This internship provides learning opportunities in public programming in relation to horticulture, botany, and natural history.

This internship runs from approximately mid-May through late August; the start and end dates are flexible.  Education Programs Interns will work 40 hours per week, including Saturdays.

Responsibilities:
The Education Programs Internship offers hands-on experience in many facets of public program management. Under the supervision and mentorship of the Education Director, the Education Programs Intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn to organize, manage, and evaluate informal leaning programs;
  • Learn to use course registration and student management software and apps;
  • Gain experience in all aspects of coordinating a busy Education Center;
  • Host members and guests at a variety of programs and events for adults and children;
  • Assist adult education instructors with education center facilities and other course execution;
  • Assist with youth education programming in our Alfond Children’s Garden
  • Correspond with students and instructors;
  • Assist with educational exhibit and library resource curation;
  • Learn best practices in customer services.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have:

  • An outgoing personality – Must be comfortable and enjoy interacting with the public
  • Some experience using databases and spreadsheets
  • Solid organizational skills
  • An interest in plants, nature, and the outdoors
  • Some coursework or experience in the field of education or the natural sciences
