Description of the Internship:
The Maine State Archives, a bureau within the Department of the Secretary of State, maintains approximately 95 million pages of official State records considered to be permanently valuable.  These include bills introduced in the Legislature, Governor’s Executive Council Reports, election returns, deeds to and from the State of Maine, maps from the Land Office, vital statistics, federal census records from Maine up to 1930, county court records dating back to 1639, and military records through World War I, to list a few.

The Maine State Archives offers unpaid internship opportunities for college students during the summer, fall and spring semesters, which can qualify for academic credit.

Responsibilities:
Interns will learn about the history of the State of Maine, as well as its preservation and archiving practices, while aiding staff members with project such as:  digital archiving; conservation; cataloging; and research.  Some projects can be customized based on the student’s interest.
Qualifications:
Applicants pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in history, library science, American studies, political science, public policy, law, archiving/museum studies and other related subjects are encourages to apply.

  • Good computer and data entry skills
  • Ability to learn archives systems to retrieve materials
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA and have attained undergraduate sophomore status
