Description of the Internship:
Sebago Trails Paddling Company is located in Raymond, Maine – the commercial center of, and gateway to, the Sebago Lakes Region of Southern Maine.  There are more than 30 places accessible to the public to launch a canoe or kayak with 12 miles of their shop.  Beginning with a focus on kayak rentals, the owners expanded to include canoes and paddleboards two years ago. Their intent is to grow the company into the Lakes Region’s leader in paddle sports outfitters.  Sebago Trails also works with several organizations that have been working in the area to provide better access to waterways for recreation as well as the restoration of traditional fisheries.

Responsibilities:
The Summer Intern will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of the daily business operations of a seasonal outdoor recreational business in Maine, with a focus on management and marketing strategies and always keeping in mind that the success of a recreational business is dependent on customers having enjoyable experiences that exceed their initial expectation.

Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain customer reservation system.
  • Follow rental process, including all necessary forms.
  • Provide an enjoyable customer experience by providing customers with relevant information about their outing, having rental items ready for customers or delivered on time, ensuring that the customers have all necessary supplies and equipment for their outing.
  • Answer customer inquiries by telephone or in person.
  • Maintain retail store and perform basic maintenance tasks on rental equipment.
  • Analyze current marketing strategies for building customer base and develop new ideas that can be implemented this season.
  • With owner’s approval, implement new marketing ideas and measure the results.
  • Analyze current operational work flow, and develop new ideas for improved operations.
  • Load and unload kayaks and canoes onto transport trailer.
  • Deliver rental equipment to customer’s location.
  • Attend community and/or business meetings to represent and promote Sebago Trails Paddling Company’s Offerings (i.e., monthly Chamber of Commerce After Hours events).  Also, meet one-on-one with other businesses and community groups.
Qualifications:
  • Strong interest in outdoor recreation
  • Good communication (verbal and writing) skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills – able to work well with staff and the general public
  • Good organizational skills
  • Training and/or experience in marketing and business management
  • Strong work ethic
  • Mature and self-motivated
