Description of the Internship:
United Way is a nonprofit organization that partners with 50 local programs to provide a better quality of life for people experiencing emergencies, hardships and personal challenges. As a Public Relations & Marketing Intern, you will be exposed to real-life, meaningful experiences in the field of public relations and marketing at United Way of Kennebec Valley, a 62-year-old organization that supports 19 communities in Central Maine. This position reports directly to United Way’s Director of Resource Development & Marketing.

This is an opportunity to find out what nonprofit communications work is really like, support an important community cause, and generate work for future portfolios. The ideal candidate is a great writer, an avid storyteller, an intrepid researcher and a creative communicator. You must excel in written and verbal communication, be social media-savvy, comfortable editing a web site and able to manage a complex assignment from start to end. You should be detail-oriented, a serious self-starter, and an adept project juggler. The intern will work 24 hours per week.

An individual must be able to perform the duties listed below at a satisfactory level:

  •  Research, curate and write compelling content for United Way’s blog, newsletter and public newspapers
  •  Create monthly e-newsletter using existing template through Constant Contact
  • Draft engaging social media posts for Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  •  Update marketing materials using Adobe Suite software
  • Use existing databases to pull detailed donor reports, which aid fundraising efforts
  •  Manage marketing collateral in preparation for United Way’s Fundraising Campaign and compile Campaign bags for participating businesses
  • Be comfortable with public speaking, cold calling and other public-relations duties
  • Collaborate closely with United Way’s four-person staff
  • Help coordinate United Way’s Annual Golf Tournament, including event sponsorships, donations, signage, programs, etc.
  • Assist in hosting Day of Caring student volunteer activities in local schools as needed
  •  Other duties as assigned
The ideal candidate will have strong communication and marketing skills along with demonstrated leadership ability. Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Other selection criteria will include demonstrated project management, team leadership experience, and extracurricular/civic activities. The candidate should also possess:

  •  Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Ability to work with all levels of staff.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office, communication, data management, digital and social media marketing skills. Knowledge of public relations and media is a plus.
  •  Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle. Work-related mileage while on-the-job is reimbursable.
