Internship Title: Summer Camp Counselors

Description of the Internship:
Y Summer Camp is the Y’s co-ed day camp located at the Y’s 93-acre Outdoor Learning and Education Center (OLEC). A quintessential Maine day camp, Y Summer Camp boasts a large playing field, wooded areas, a brook and more (alymca.org).

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp.  Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience. Counselors are expected to work 40+ hours per week and are paid a weekly stipend starting at $440.

Responsibilities
  •  Provide safety, group leadership and supervision, manage behaviors and create a positive group dynamic by building positive relationships.
  •  Assist Activity Leaders in implementing scheduled activities and assist in any way directed. 
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  •  Attends staff functions, meetings and trainings, including Child Abuse Prevention.
  • Assist in the planning of assigned theme weeks/days, field trips and family events. 
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. 
  • Understand, accept and incorporate the Y’s Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Experience working with Children.
  • Having First Aid, CPR,Lifeguarding or Archery certifications are a plus.
