Working at the UMF Fitness & Recreation Center is a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity for students in any major at UMF. Our student workers have positive, energetic personalities, are self-motivated, and take their work seriously as professionals.

UMF Fitness & Recreation Center student work-study & department funded positions are still available.

Our focused hiring time is the first few weeks of the fall semester; afterward positions are available to those with specialty certifications such as lifeguards, group fitness instructors, personal trainers, ropes course and other recreation-based certifications.

Positions not listed below are typically hired internally by students already working for us.

Building Attendant
Responsibilities include supervising member activities well utilizing the facility, basic cleaning of equipment, and equipment inventory. As a constant ambassador of the facility, members will look to you for advice, assistance, and other information. Through regular walking rounds of the facility, you are the eyes and ears for promoting safety within the facility. Shifts run open to close 7-days a week, in coordination with facility hours.

To be hired as a lifeguard, you must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate or equivalent. Our pool has one guard on duty most times. This requires guards to have strong communication and rescuer skills. General job related tasks included, patron surveillance, injury prevention, and cleaning/maintains on pool area.

Swim Instructor or Swim Aid
To be hired as a Water Safety Instructor, you should have teaching experience and/or you must hold a current swim instructor certification; American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification is preferred, but not required. Swim Aid must hold basic swim skills and an understanding of child development.

Mainely Outdoors Trip Leader
Responsibilities include, organizing, communicating, and leading of multi-ability level trips. Included but limited to hiking, mountain biking, paddle sports, snowshoeing, x-country skiing, and other outdoor sports. Leaders must have weekends available, as Saturday’s are big trip days! New hires will be required to complete a First Aid and CPR class (provided at no cost). Applicant should have a background and proficiency in outdoor recreation and a true passion for the outdoors.

Front Desk Staff
Responsibilities include opening facility, answering the phone, processing transactions, directing visitors, providing customer service and small projects as assigned. Shifts range from 2-4 hours during facility hours.

Cradles & Crayons Staff
Responsible for supervising our drop-in childcare program for non-school aged children Monday – Friday, 9-10am.  Staff set up equipment, play games, read stories, and provide general supervision.

After School Program Staff
Supervise and participate in games, activities, and arts and crafts for children ages 6-12 at the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. The program operates M-F 3-5pm with staff hours being 2:30-5:30 (times may be adjusted to accommodate school schedules).

Intramural Staff
The student staff coordinate and run intramural activities which include 6 sports, weekend tourneys, and a year ending event.  Responsibilities include registration, refereeing, running game clocks and scoreboards, and set-up and break-down of the event. Eligible candidates for this positions should be past participants of the program. Games are held Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. with outdoor games running 4:30-8:00pm and indoor games running 7:45-11:00pm.

Group Fitness Instructors
To be hired as a group fitness instructor you must hold a current certification from a nationally recognized certifying organization (examples: ACE or AFAA) or you must have completed the instructor training course offered through the UMF Fitness & Recreation Center. Group Fitness classes include a variety of cardiovascular workouts, aquatic workouts, and group strength training. Additional training can prepare you to teach specialized classes such as Pilates or Yoga. You will be responsible for teaching safe, effective and enjoyable exercise and setting up and putting away any equipment used in the class. You are a motivator as well as an instructor in group fitness. You may have the opportunity to teach a cardio or aquatic section of PHE 010.

Personal Trainers
To be hired as a personal trainer you must hold a current certification from a nationally recognized certifying organization (examples: ACE, ACSM, AFAA, others) or you must have completed the personal trainer preparation course offered through the UMF Fitness & Recreation Center. Personal trainers assist members of the Fitness & Recreation Center with fitness assessments, goal setting, and individualized exercise program planning to achieve those goals. A trainer should have good communication and organizational skills as well as sound fitness knowledge. Personal trainers’ work hours are flexible based on client appointments.
